'Music of the Nile Valley'

Various Bedouin families

(LYRCD7355)

'This is the earthy, spirited music of Bedouin families of the Nile Valley, featuring vocals and ancient traditional instruments such as the rababa, darrabuka (dumbek), suffara, nay flutes, and mizmar. A memorable musical odyssey deep into the land of the Pharaohs with various Bedouin families.'

'Much Arabic music originated in the encampments of nomadic tribes along the Arabic Peninsula. One can imagine the Bedouins in their constant wanderings singing traditional chants accompanied by the dull thump of camel hooves. At the same time, another type of incantation was coming which was eventually to inspire and influence the medieval epic era of Europe. These chants extolled the merits of daring warriors and exalted the feats of men in battle. Today inhabitants of Upper Egypt still retain deeply rooted social ties to the ancestral customs and tribal institutions of the past. This is the earthy, spirited music of Bedouin families of the Nile Valley, featuring vocals and ancient traditional instruments such as the rababa, darrabuka (dumbek), suffara, nay flutes, and mizmar. A memorable musical odyssey deep into the land of the Pharaohs! Recorded in Egypt by Alain Weber. Music of the Nile Valley'
From sleeve notes.

'Egypt: Music of the Nile Valley (Lyrichord) draws its inspiration from the ancient Arabic story-telling and musical traditions of the Bedouin tribes and their modern, Upper Egyptian folk counterparts. The sounds ride on hypnotic, improve currents as droning horns, inspired flutes and earthy percussion pass on ancestral wisdom to the tribal villagers. At seasonal community festivals, the musicians are revered as "guide(s) of the spiritual and moral values of the village." They create sinewy tapestries for dance and relate epic tales in their poem-songs. Jazz-like chases or call-and-response solos snake around the fervent vocals and chants. The effect is mystifying: through texture and tone, the positive message comes through, even if you're unfamiliar with the language.'
