'Sounds from the Seven Towers - A Héttorony hangjai' features the most successful contemporary dance music pieces composed by Ferenc Kiss between 1992 and 2000. Among them are the celebrated composition written for the Hungarian Pavilion, which was designed by Imre Makovecz for the Expo 1992 in Seville; the accompanying music written for the folk-dance gala programs at the Szeged Open Air Festival; some music excerpts to the dance choreographies by
Jolán Foltin and other rarities.
The music is contemporary and reflects Ferencs' love of the folk music from the Carpathian Basin. This CD - just as the previous album,
'Outlaws Of The City- Nagyvárosi Bujdosók
(ER-CD 020), is published in an exclusive book format and constitutes the second piece of a planned trilogy by the composer. The 24 page book, with text in English and Hungarian, contains many colour photos from the pieces associated with the music, and essays by Ferenc.
Ferenc Kiss was born in Debrecen, Hungary in 1954. He studied Ethnology at Eötvös Lóránt Tudomány University in Hungarian and has worked as a musician, composer, and folk music researcher. With an extraordinary understanding of musical styles related to authentic folk music, he is a master at mixing different styles of music in such a way that the music never loses the purity of the melodies.
As a composer and producer he takes elements of Hungarian folk music and builds them into a unique and novel system of composition, complimenting traditional acoustic folk instrumentation with current recording technology and techniques.
Archaic songs and texts are embedded in a composed setting, thereby giving them a whole new meaning; an organic relationship with the arts (dance, theatre, film) being achieved throughout his work. With the conscious decision to reinterpret and experiment, he breathes new life into folk music traditions bringing them forward to the contemporary on the boundaries of alternative and popular music.
As well as his solo work Ferenc is a member of the Odessa Klezmer Band and works regularly with Hungarian singer
Kati Szvorak.
