Tito Puente released over 100 albums, the two contained on this CD being
from his time on the Tico label.
'El Rey, The King' (Tico 1172) was originally released in 1968, and
'Palante! Straight!' (Tico 1214) in 1970. Both have been fully
re-mastered for this CD.
'Mambo, the orchestral Latin sound incorporating many elements of big-band swing Jazz, was Tito
Puente' abiding love. His early career, beginning in the 50’s, was heavily influenced by artists such as Mambo progenitor Arsenio Rodriguez.
These two albums came when Puente was already a well-established star in the Latin firmament of the Puerto-Rican-Cuban/NYC melting pot. Both the heavily psychedelic cover of
'El Rey, The King' and the all-action cover shot of 'Pa'lante!
Straight!' depict Tito playing the Timbales for which the orchestra leader was justly famous, underlining the strong percussive style of the man’s wonderful music.'
