Extract from notes:
"PEASANT BRASS BANDS FROM MOLDAVIA: VORONA
Vorona is a commune in Botosani county (in north-east of the province of Moldavia) inhabited by 8500 people grouped in six villages: Vorona, Vorona Mare, Vorona Teodoru, Jolde~ti, Icuseni and Poiana. With its unpretentious, yet well-groomed aspect, the commune seems to be heading for some well being.

Its present-day upturn was preceded by a long period of unemployment, extreme poverty, corruption, tension, frustration and despair: the 1990s. After 2002, when Romanians became freer to move around the world, the
young horoneni (inhabitants of Uorona) took heart and went looking for jobs in Italy, Germany, Austria, Spain, Canada, Australia... Their estrangement didn't bring them happiness, but they are content to support their families and build houses in which they will dwell only when they find work in their native region.

The Tloroneni are industrious, determined, calm, and not very talkative. The young who work in the West save a11 the money they can, while the adults and the elderly who stayed behind build or consolidate their houses, raise their children, and are engaged in centuries-old occupations - farming, cattle raising and forestry. Many still practice traditional crafts - pottery, wood carving, fabric manufacturing, and mask making for the New Year rituals.

People toil all day long, but reserve Sundays and Orthodox Christian holy days for rest and partying. The occasions for partying are countless: the patron festivals of the 12 churches and two monasteries of the commune (in particular the festival of Uorona monastery - an architectural gem and a hub of civilization which the villagers hold in very high esteem), the fairs, the Village Sons' Day, festivities in honor of the twin communes (one in France, the other one in the Republic of Moldova), weddings, betrothals..."
