Songs and stories

Aromanians
A researcher of Balkan history and culture may ignore Aromanians for a while. But as soon as he "discovers" them, he is surprised to remark that there is no corner left in the entire peninsula in which they haven't played a significant role. Aromanians held for a long time in control land traffic between Venice and Constantinople; they were active jewelers (gold and silver artisans), innkeepers, storeowners, bankers and politicians; they
excelled in animal breeding, trade and South East European transport; they set up and developed companies in most cities across South East Europe; finally, they distinguished themselves in the Balkan peoples' liberation wars against the Ottoman occupation.

Today, Aromanians live all over the Balkan Peninsula but are grouped especially in northern Greece (Pindus Mountains, Epirus, Thessaly, Macedonia, Vemuon Mountains, Olympus), southern Albania (especially in the districts of Kolonja, Korqe, Pogradec, Vlore, Fier), the Republic of Macedonia (the Prespa- Ohrid region, Pelagonia and the eastern valley of Vardar river), Romania (Dobmdja) and Bulgaria (Western Rhodopes, Rila).

The Aromanians from the village of Andon Poci
Inhabited by Aromanians alone, the village is situated in the south of Albania, 16 kilometers from the town of Gjirokaster (Arom. Ljurokastru). It dates from as recently as 1957-1960. However, local tradition already mentions the four great families of founding shepherds, forced by authorities to descend from the Bureto Mountains and join the communist cooperative farms. The land where they settled went by the name of Tavan, hence the name of tavaniot given to the inhabitants of the area. The new village was named after an Aromanian hero from World War II, Andon Poci.
