Peasant Musicians of Codru, Maramures -
Ceatarasi din Codru, Maramures

(Cassette C-007)

Musicians:
Dumitru Iederan - violin, flute
Dan Daniel - violin
Adrian Pasca - contra viola
Viorel Negrea - contra viola
Calin Rat - gordon violincello

'The leader of the ensemble is Dumitru Iederan, the best instrumentalist from Codru. He learned to play from a famous violinist, Isidor Serban (main role in the movie Gadgo dillo) from the village of Stana. Afterwards he studied the classic violin. He came back to the peasant music because he felt he cannot leave it without failure.  Iederan is real conservatory. He thinks is that the music of Codru has to be preserved in his pure and beauty rural aspect inherited from long on. His opinion could be contested, of course; but what it really does matter is the fact that his music is really beautiful.

The instrumentalists on this tape are the disciples of musician Dumitru Iederan, who is famous in his region and was in turn an apprentice musician with the Gypsy ceteras Isidor Serban (main role in the movie Gadgo dillo) from the village of Stana. The four young men - none is older than 26 - learned from Iederan not only to handle the fiddle but also to build the ensemble's accompaniment instruments: the contra (a bigger and taller viola with three strings on a short bridge, tuned in an unusual way) and the gardon (a sort of robust three-string cello). Both instruments are played with short and thick fiddlesticks made by the musicians, which make the strings vibrate powerfully. An ensemble from Codru sounds as forcefully and densely as a chamber orchestra.'
