'Romanian Christmas Carols'

(ELDC138)

Transylvanian and Romanian Christmas Carols Folk Music.

Nicolae furdui-Iancu is joined by Dinu Iancu-Salajanu on tracks 13 to 26.

From sleeve notes:
'These songs accompanied whole generations. Taking as their starting-point the Romanian people's love of their country and their hope for freedom, the songs represented whispers, shouts or calls-to-arms. They brought together mothers' tears and aspirations, they united the people's spirits in moments of difficulty, flying like a bird over temporary borders.

After sunny days came hard times, and some people -those who destroyed Romania's history- books page by page - never even wanted to hear these songs.

How many good Romanians have gone to their graves with these songs in their souls? The songs remained an eternal light above them, representing illumination and hope.

Eventually noble souls and enlightened minds rediscovered these songs - near the old altars, near the village priests and teachers. The songs were performed again by fiery voiced singers - it was if the concert hall, performers and audience ceased to exist and only the song itself remained. These songs inspire kindness; they remind the Romanians that, beyond and through time, the Romanian country belongs to its people.

Aptly called "creations" and received by academics with the natural caution that always greets the work of "village intellectuals", these songs have won a special place and the right to be considered as folklore in their own right. In these songs every true Romanian can recognise himself, his history, his pains, his longing. Beyond the rigours of musicology, however, they are also performed by young children at school and they are also regularly sung at times of difficulty or at festivals - or indeed at any time.

By means of this recording Nicolae Furdui-lancu, a performer who was proud to introduce the costumes and songs of the "moti" on stage, confesses his faith, inherited from those marvelous mountaineers. As usual he performs in a sober and decisive manner; his mature voice with its beautiful timbre invites us to regard these songs as historical documents, as is usual in his home in the heart of the Ardeal region.

When we listen to him, we remember that songs were the first means of teaching history to children 'in the Moti's land'. Thanks to the song, they know all the roads of their "Little Prince', they know that Avram lancu is not dead. but only asleep and keeping watch... Who can stop their songs; who can destroy their faith?'
