Mainly a collection of folk and dance music from the various regions of
Romania. This, along with its companion volume 2,
is a good introduction to the folk music of Romania that was nurtured by
the socialist movement there in the 60s and 70s.
Contains tracks by many of the leading stars of Romanian folk
music.
'The Romanian dances are: closed dance (Hora), open circle (Roata),
column, the dancers holding by their shoulders (Sirba) or by each other's
belt (Briul) and pairs ('De doi' or 'Doi' and 'Invirtita'). A number of
dances though following the above mentioned patterns, have acquired
different names. 'Sorocul' (track 4), a dance tune from Banat, seems to be
an old recruiting song ('soroc' means 'term'); 'Pe picior' (track 10),a
variant od 'briu', described a certain dance step; 'Zvoanele' (track 27)
is the articulated plural of the noun 'zvon', the local name for bell in
the Banat Plain; 'Cadineascea (tarck 28) is of oriental, Turkish origin; 'Geamparalele'
(track 29) once meant two small discs made of wood or metal, clapped
during the dancing, and so on.
Romanian dances are generally fast and have a binary rhythm. Examples of
ternary time are not specific to Romania. But there are a lot of dances in
asymmetrical rhythm (tracks 16(a), 21, 23, 28, 29). Differing in style
from one area of the country to the other, the dances make up a
fascinating catalogue of Romanian folk music'
