'Comori ale muzicii lautaresti, Timbal'

(EDC164)

A further collection from the archives of Electrecord, Romania, showing the brilliance of Toni Iordache's cimbalom (timbal in Romanian) playing. Accompaniment is by small folk orchestras including those led by: Nicu Stanescu, Victor Predescu, Gheorghe Zamfir, Tudor Pana, Florian Economu, Ansamblul Ciocirlia (director Victor
Predescu).

'This CD includes dances, songs, melancholy Romanian folk-songs (doinas) and ballads from different parts of the country.

From sleeve notes:
"Toni Iordache, a true 'rhapsode' of gypsy folk music but also of traditional Romanian folklore, was born in a family of a famous fiddler player in Baldana, Ilfov County, in 1942. Very early in his life he proved to be quite talented. He took a liking in cimbalom (timbal in Romanian) and studied with determination this wonderful instrument that offers the generous harmonies and rhythms of our folk melodies.

Due to his outstanding accomplishment as a cimbalom (timbal in Romanian) player, Toni Iordache has entered the gallery of great and famous gypsy music players in our musical history, among which Luca Stefanescu, cimbalom (timbal in Romanian) player well-known in Europe in the 19th century, Vasile Budisteanu (father of lonel Budisteanu) cymbalom accompaniment in the orchestra of Grigoras Dinicu; George Pantazi, outstanding cembalo player in Doina Music Ensemble of the Armed Forces, Cocos - the folk music orchestra of the Radio Broadcasting Society; N. Visan, in the Barbu Lautaru Orchestra; Dinu Filip, Ciocarlia Orchestra, and last but not least, Dumitru Marinescu-Ciuciu in the Union Ensemble the student of whom Toni Iordache was for a while. It is from him that Toni Iordache learned how to read music notes and developed a liking for concert variations on folklore themes.

In 1960, Toni Iordache was employed by the folk music orchestra Ciocarlia, under the masterful and firm baton of violin player and conductor Victor Predescu, where he found an environment that was favourable to his artistic development.

This ensemble, famous both at home and abroad, was managed with competence by Viorel Dobos - art director and main conductor, Mircea Chiriac, composer, Victor Predescu - conductor, Eugen Gal, lacob Ciortea, Stefan Carapanceanu and myself. Toni Iordache was highly appreciated by all of them, encouraged to enrich his repertoire and to permanently improve his technique.

The alert and also strong sound of the cembalo hammers together with a clear and well defined concept and a vivid imagination enabled him to faithfully render a rich repertoire of doina, sad, longing or love songs of the traditional gypsy repertoire as well as songs of different dances in the regions of Muntenia, Oltenia, Dobrogea, Moldova or other folklore regions of the country..."
