Immortal songs
"Since recently I have known Floarea Calota to be a folk singer of the Teleorman area. But now she surprises us with a
CD release that approaches the great fiddler music repertoire, successful for more than a century due to the famous voices of Fanica Luca, loana Radu, Maria
Tanase, Teodor Zavaidoc, Farimita Lambru, Dumitru Dona Siminica and others. Also a continuer of the fiddler music of rural or urban origin was Ion Albesteanu, the violin player, singer and conductor of the orchestra with which
Floarea Calota realized most of her recordings. Ion Albesteanu was her role model and just like him, when she takes to the great repertoire of the love songs she recreates it in a totally original and personal manner. Which means that the sound of Teleorman, her home-town, will pervade all the disc not only songs such as
'Cintecul Chirigiului' (Cabby's Song), 'loane din Teleorman' (John Of Teleorman), 'Pe vale, tato, pe vale' (Down in the valley, aunty, down in the valley) and other two or three songs characteristic of the region. This way, stylistically speaking.. many of these true folk masterpieces were brought home from the repertoire of the Bucharest area where they got through the fiddler players of the
neighbouring areas.
For the fans of the genre and of Floarea Calota, the this CD
release will be both a surprise and a success. She comes with a selection of the best from an anthological repertoire. The interpretation comes in a voice with deep inflections and force that takes us from an affective register to
another, typical of her love and old songs. These songs render simple human
stories, family joys or dramas, an entire life experience all rendered in a high
musical and poetic expression.
The CD brings to our attention another refined quality of the artist, In the selection she made,
Floarea Calota proves again that our folk music is based on new forms that will always grow from the stem of tradition and in total agreement with it. More often than not, the new is a
richer, updated form of the old.
Some of these songs, such as 'Trei focuri arde pe lume' (Three fires burn in the world),
'Pelin beau, pelin maninc' (Bitter's what I drink. bitter's what I eat),
'Un tigan avea o casa' (A gypsy man had a house) were less circulated at the end of
the last century and mainly in instrumental interpretation. Along Ion
Albesteanu, who brought such love songs back into the concert repertoire, and Alexandru
Mica, who made that extended anthology of the Romanian folk song, Floarea Calota takes us one step further to enjoy the beauty of such songs and to meditate at the beauty of this repertoire that blossomed from the creation of the most authentic fiddler's creations in the country.
The almost traditional accompaniment, with certain urban elements contributed by the folk music
band 'Balada' under conductor Adrian Grigoras, lend the respective recordings a
colourful touch.
At the same time, this new disc of Floarea Calota is one more proof that the artist has unlimited resources of creation and of processing old original folk
songs. This is a
fortunate alternative for the audience in search of new songs and also an opportunity to discover that there are passing fashions and values that resist the passage of time. And many of the songs on this disc are immortal." Gruia Stoia
