Ion Petre Stoican: a superb Bucharest violinist who
played in the Musica Lautareasca style. This is the only album ever recorded by Romanian violinist
Ion Petre Stoican. A delight from start to finish, the recording dates from 1966 but was only ever released
in Romania in 1977.
Ion Petre Stoican is joined with an all-star ensemble for a series of ballads and energetic dance numbers, including such gems as "Briu Din Oltenita." Stoican displays some stunning Gypsy blues singing on "I-Ti Mireasa, Ziua Buna," and other tracks are littered with solos from the likes of
Toni Iordache, Ionica Minune and others.
From record label:
'On the only long-playing record by the Romanian violinist Ion Petre Stoican the most important Gypsy musicians
from the Bucharest Lautari scene were united in an All-star band and through a bizarre stroke of luck created
one of the most atmospheric records of the time. Most of the pieces played came from Constanta and from
Stoican's birthplace Oltenita, and are primarily fast rhythmic dances such as Hora, Briu, Sirba or
Geamparale, which no wedding could do without. Recovered from the archives of
Electrecord and out on CD now: Romanian traditional music in original analog
sound recorded in the 1970s!'
'It's good to see the eastern European treasure-trove beginning to open up as former state labels open their
huge back-catalogues so that great recordings are emerging once more...'
Andrew Cronshaw, fROOTS magazine
'Backed by the cream of Bucharest's gipsy musical fraternity, veteran wedding fiddler
Ion Petre Stoican comes on like an earthier Stephane Grappelli, trading squeakily eloquent phrases with
Toni Iordache's skittering cimbalom.'
