From sleeve notes:
A Romanian Prom Concert
Value has nothing to do with the size of a musical composition, but popularity
does, as the most widely known works are usually shorter ones. Professionally
speaking, the composer has to solve equally difficult problems both in a symphony and in a miniature. Only
the form is easier to control in the latter. ..Small-scale" genres undoubtedly but melodically call for harmonic
invention, simplicity and elegance, as well as - most importantly - for personal expression. Miniatures
contribute significantly towards one's awareness of a particular musical culture or school of composition.
This record hopefully offers a representative sample in respect of information and aesthetic gratification.
In the first place it offers a comprehensive palette of works from the
20th century and 19th century, whose dominant trait is their national character stemming
from the utilization of thematic material of folkloric origin (authentic, adapted or invented in this spirit):
secondly, by the generosity of their inspiration and their elaboration, these works can offer great
satisfaction to music lovers - to the knowledgeable ones too...
Romanian composers include:
loan Scarlatescu, Th. Rogalski, Iosif Ivanovici, Constantin Bobescu, Grigoras Dinicu, Constantin Dimitrescu, Ciprian Porumbescu, Paul Constantinescu, Dumitru Capoianu etc.
