(EDC438)

Catalin Ilea -  violoncello
Nicolae Licaret - piano

Label - Electrecord, Romania

George Enescu sonatas for violincello and piano.

From CD sleeve notes:
'Catalin Ilea directs a cello class at the prestigious Hochschule der Kunste in Berlin. He was born in Timigoara, Romania, in 1940. At the age of seven, he started to play the cello and studied in Bucharest, Moscow, Rome and Prague. Four first prizes in international competitions heralded a career that has taken him to all the major concert stages of both Europe and North America. He has appeared as a soloist with many of the most important orchestras in the world and has been invited to participate in many renowned festivals in Europe, the USA and Asia. At only thirty-five years of age, Catalin Ilea began to serve as a juror at international competitions, among them the Pablo Casals Competition. Pierre Fournier wrote about him: 'It is a great pleasure to record my admiration for this outstanding artist"

Ilea's performances always display a "sovereign technique" (Dagens Nyheter, Stockholm) as well as "marvellous intelligence and sensibility" (La Suisse, Zurich). He has recently been concentrating on recording rare works of the cello repertoire (such as George Enescu's Symphonie concertante, Jacques Offenbach's Concerto militaire, the concertos of Eugene
a 'Albert and Anatol Vieru or the Variations of Andrew Loyd Webber).

For more than 25 years, Nicolae Licarel soloist with the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra, Bucharest, has made an important contribution to the concert life of Romania and elsewhere; he regularly receives excellent reviews for his performances on piano, harpsichord or organ.

Born in Bucharest in 1943, Licaret began studying the piano at the age of five. After completing his musical education and graduating from the Bucharest Academy of Music he attended master classes in piano and harpsichord, whilst also studying the organ. In 1968 he became a member of the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra. Bucharest, where since January 1991, he has also been Artistic Director. Since 1973, Nicolae Licarel has embarked upon a constant stream of concert activity, playing the harpsichord, organ and piano under such conductors as Carlo Zecchi, Witold Lutoslawski and Igor Markevitch, and alongside soloists such as Henryk Szeryng, Jean-Jacques Kantorow and Gheorghe Zamfir.

He participates in numerous festivals all over the world and has performed in all the major concert halls in Europe and beyond. He appears as a concert soloist, chamber musician, accompanist, founder-performer of the "Concertino" Quintet and member of the renowned "Pro Ante" ensemble. His vast repertoire encompasses all the essential works as well as contemporary works from Romania and abroad; he has given many first performances of the new compositions. Nicolae Licaret has also made numerous radio and commercial recordings.'
