Caprice Roumain for Violin and Orchestra
"I am working on a Caprice for violin and orchestra, in which I am translating the dialogue between the playing of a gypsy fiddle,
and the accompaniment of his folk music band. I am writing it in a folk character. I am not using the word style
because it denotes something existing, given from the very beginning."
These are probably the only but also the very interesting
references George Enescu made to his Capnce Roumain, as they appeared
in an interview he granted to a Romanian provincial newspaper in 1928.
Quite revealing is here not only the musician's pointing, in an extremely clear way, to the scenario
(the
dialogue between the fiddler and the folk music band) that gave him the inspiration for the
Caprice, but also the explanation of the 'in folk character'
syntagm...
