HUNGARIAN BAGPIPERS

"This disc was conceived and compiled to honour and pay homage to the bagpipers of old and to bring the bagpiping tradition of Hungary to a wider audience. A single CD, of course, by nature of its limited size cannot hope to paint a complete picture of each and every Hungarian bagpiper, close to one hundred of whom are represented in the musical archives - therefore it is but a selection. We have deliberately omitted the most crackly of the performances preserved on phonographic cylinders, which, although considered a delicacy by the bagpipers of today, are difficult listening for the modern generation, whose ears have become accustomed to the perfection of modern sound reproduction. The quality of some of the recordings still leaves a little to be desired but since they are unique recordings we disregarded these shortcomings while making our selection.

An appraisal of these melodies reveals how widely these bagpipe tunes were diffused throughout the entire Hungarian language area. Later, after the tradition of bagpipe playing had declined, the sound of the bagpipes was imitated by the human voice and the violin, since among country folk the bagpipe remained one of the most popular instruments. A large number of mysterious stories spread concerning the piper who danced to the music of his own instrument even after it had been hung up on a nail on the wall or about how he had made a pact with the devil.

Fortunately, the young traditionalists have sustained the life of the instrument so we can now declare that Hungarian bagpipe music will not die out within Hungary.

On this disc we can appreciate the piping and singing of Mihaly Bertok 'Hurjak', Imre Jankovics, Laszlo Kelemen, Jozsef Koos, Erno Kukucska, Antal Lapati, Peter Lukacs, Imre Seres and Janos Szikora, which can now only be heard from recordings. In making our compilation, we naturally could not fail to include the last living representative of traditional bagpipe music, lstvan Pal. Here we offer a taste of the rich musical feast enjoyed during the merrymaking of old.

May we take delight in it, too!

My heart is filled with grateful memories of Imre Seres and Janos Szikora, and I here express my thanks to Istvan Pal - their artistry made a great impression on me during my meetings with them and they have all done much to help my understanding and pursuit of bagpipe music.
Gyorgy Lanyi, bagpiper and member of Teka Ensemble
