Reviewer: Erika B Volume 6 of Uj Elo Nepzene - Mystical, Magical, Musical Landscapes of Transylvania Close your eyes and imagine ... quaint villages with spiked church steeples nestled in green valleys or along hillsides, winding roads through lush verdant forests, red-shingled roof-tops with carved wooden eaves on pastel-colored houses with flower gardens, sheep or cattle grazing on grassy slopes, a chapel on the roadside for the weary wanderer of 100 years ago to pray for a safe passage, a large walled-off estate with towers protruding from every corner, spiraled onion-domed church steeples rising to meet the sky ... the Carpathian mountains ... where time has stood still and traditional music has remained relatively unchanged for over a century. The ethnomusicologists, Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly, and more recently Zoltan Kallos, discovered well-preserved traditional music in remote villages of Transylvania and recognized its value and importance. Like archaeologists sifting through ancient ruins, they listened to the music, recorded and saved it for us to enjoy. Volume 6 of the "Uj Elo Nepzene" series is another glittering, shining example of exciting traditional Hungarian music created from the past but played by modern groups. There are a total of 22 tracks on the CD, 16 of which are from regions in Transylvania. The inimitable Transylvanian style is evident as the violin strings produce trills and frequent half-step note variations in sound. This is real tanchaz music: passionate, energetic, zestful created by chromatic violin-playing. One's emotions and energy surge in response to the music! You begin to snap your fingers, hum the melody, and do unexpected impromptu dance steps across the floor ... the music casts its mystical, magical spell ... which lasts for many hours after listening! Examples of music which evokes such responses are: track #1 "Uzent nekem Janos diak ..." (Szek), track #3 "Kalotaszegi par" (Banffyhunyad), track #7 "Halgato, Csardas es Friss" (Alsokalocsa), track #9 "Szatmari Muzsika Murzsa Gyulatol" (Szatmar) and track #11 "Szokes, Korcsos, es Suru Csardas" (Palatka). Add to this the richly textured female vocals of Maria Miskolczi, as she sings "Uzent nekem Janos diak ..." or Nora Kovacs who sings "Szeki dalok" and the question of why Hungarian music is gaining recognition and popularity in the world music genre is quickly answered. Other styles of music present on this CD are: melancholy love songs and flirtatious, playful ones, a male chorus singing a medley of soldier's songs, male solos accompanied by a single instrument, respectively citera (zither), tekero (hurdy-gurdy), or koboz (short-necked lute), there is also a duda (bagpipe) instrumental. Listening to this music opens a portal into another dimension ... there is a time-shift. For over an hour, you are transported to another time and place and quite disoriented after returning. When you open your eyes ... you feel more alive, more real then ever before, your senses are heightened! You have returned from a mystical, magical, musical journey to Transylvania ... where you can return anytime by listening to Volume 6 of "Uj Elo Nepzene." "Uzent nekem Janos diak ..." translated by this writer When sorrow was being distributed - I was not even there, but I was given more than a fair share; Probably when it will be distributed again, All of it will be mine. My eyes look toward heaven as my tears fall to the ground. My tears flow without ceasing to the ground. They drop onto my sorrowful chest. The spring is beautiful, the summer is beautiful, It is most beautiful to have a partner, the spring is beautiful, the summer is beautiful, it is most beautiful to have a partner Do not step on ice or you might slip. Do not love me or you might be happy. You stepped on ice and you did fall. You loved me but you were *not* happy. I have only one regret that I cheated myself by choosing you. I was a rose that stood out among the other flowers, none-the-less I chose unwisely. I would choose again but it is too late, the beautiful days have gone by. I would choose again but it is too late, the rain is falling down upon me. The student Janos (John) sends his greetings. He offers me a bouquet of lilies of the valley. I do not accept his lilies of the valley. I do not accept the overtures of John the student. A soldier sends his greetings. He offers me a cotton dress as a gift. I do not accept his gift, the cotton dress. I do not accept the overtures of the soldier. The merchant sends his greetings. He offers me a red-beaded (coral?) necklace. I do not accept the red-beaded necklace. I do not accept the overtures of the merchant. The boot-maker sends his greetings. He offers me a pair of red boots. I do not accept a pair of red boots. I do not accept the overtures of the boot-maker. Barna (Brown) Pista (Steve) sends me his greetings. He offers me a tender kiss. I accept his tender kiss. I accept Barna Pista's overtures. |
