Extract from sleeve notes:
'Now we can listen to the one thing by which all is measured in the closed community of traditional Hungarian folk music, folk song and folk dance - the epitome of eastern violin style, a bowing technique based on the motion of waves, incredible musical freedom, a liberated handling of melody, chords and rhythm.
The Transylvanian Hungarian village of Szek a village of three sections known as fel (upper) szeg, csipke (lace) szeg and forro (warm) szeg is the village where Istvan Adam, nicknamed 'Icsan', lived and played music with his sons.
Adam Istvan Icsan's band was the most popular in the Csipkeszeg area of Szek, where still today they serve as the musical model; as masters of unified ensemble playing, for their rhythms, talent for serving the musical needs of the audience, and loving kindness.
At the beginning of the recording we are in a dance house where the sequence of things is important and since the music, above all serves the dancing partying crowd, tuning happens while playing. Because everyone has a favorite tune for dancing the csardas, the couple dancing in front of the band at the moment determines which melody is being played, independently whether or not they had finished playing the previous melody or not.
This CD bears the complete truth of these recordings, as a slice from real life.
Every vibration of the music seeps to us, and this is the basic condition of taking on a tradition.
According to my friend and music teacher; Sandor Csoori Jr: 'the music, the song, the dance is the expression of the health of the village culture and in Szek this has been preserved the most
completely and the longest. The way the music breathes, goes up and down, the always changing sequences of melodies, can all observed the best in the dance
house.
The singing of Mark Josef and Szabo Varga Gyorgy reveals a unique style that preserves features of Hungarian shaman singing.'
