The Csik Band
which plays traditional Hungarian village music, was founded in Kecskermet,
Hungary, in 1988.
'Unique on this CD is the rarely heard music of Northern Mezoseg. The
arrangement for the Menyasszonykisero (music played during the wedding
day, literally, escorting the bride) was composed on the basis of field
recordings we made in the village of Erdoszombattelke (Cluj County,
Transylvania, Romania). The arrangement strives to give an authentic
rendition of the playing style of first fiddle from the village, Varga
Laszlo Balogh and his band.
The Szbrakoztato muzslka (amusing, or light music) from the same village,
is made up of Hungarian, Romanian and Gypsy melodies, reflecting the rich
ethnic mixture of Transylvania where these different nationalities have
been living together for centuries.
The Lakodalmi nota (wedding song) from Bogartelke, Transylvania is unique
because the first and second violin parts are in thirds.'
