Ternipe, or Youth in English, are a new group consisting
of young Gypsy musicians.
From Press release:
'Young people from Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County and from Budapest
established the group in 1989. It consists of people with Romany mother
tongue who strive to ensure that the folk music and the folk songs of this
minority reach the public from a clear source.
The aim of the group is to collect and to arrange still retraceable gypsy
folk traditions, especially instrumental and non-instrumental folk music
thereby making it available for everyone.
The musical harmonies used by the group is specific in a way as the fifths
and the thirds introduce such a performance in folklore that we might
otherwise only meet with in the Balkan or Far-East culture.
There are three different dialects to be found in the folk music of Romany
tradition:
1. Lóki Gilji – slow, ballad type(Rubato)
2. Róvjaki Gilji – song for the stick-dance, performed in 4/4 or 3/4
rhythm
3. Khelimaski Gilji – danced in solo or in pair in 2/3 rhythm or 'gyett'.'
