The Horo Orchestra is the most popular folk formation in Northern
Bulgaria. It features talented musicians, well-versed in the local folklore character, who
are also brilliant performers. Vassil Purvanov, the famous clarinetist, is the Orchestra's
founder and leader.
The Horo style preserves the authenticity of the North-Bulgarian musical idiom. The
performers treat the harmonisation of the musical material with consummate care, without
altering its original modal, metric, and rhythmical patterns. The highly successful
combination of folk instruments (wooden pipe, tamboura, and tupan - big drum) and modern
ones (clarinet, saxophone, accordion, double-bass), sets its sound apart from other
similar formations.
The Horo Orchestra is laureate of competitions and festivals both at home and abroad.
