From label:
"The 1950s marked the beginning of a renewal of Bulgarian folk art. Many national and local folk art festivals were founded at that time. Radio Sofia and the regional radio stations tried to attract talented singers and musicians for their programmes. For many of those people of different professions folk music became a destiny. One of the newly found talents of that time was the Dobroudja singer
Dobra Savova. She was born in the village of Koriten, Dobroudja region and inherited the singing talent of her family. Her gift was appreciated well beyond the boundaries of her village when she was noticed by music specialists at a folk art festival. This set
is from the beginning of her professional career and today we always connect the Dobroudja region with her songs. These are songs of her family and her village. People started listening to them on Radio Varna, at concerts, on the programmes of Radio Sofia. She has made numerous recordings, which will pass on to future generations her unique singing talent and authentic Dobroudja vocal style. The present programme presents a part of them. It begins with the song
'Esen se zaesenyava', which has brought her popularity and the never-fading love of her listeners."
Extract from CD notes:
"Dobra Savova is one of the most famous, respected and loved folk singers from the Dobroudja region. She has a vast and exceedingly varied repertoire. Her skill of singing is beyond comparison: one cannot mistake her voice with any of the other "gold voices" of North-Eastern Bulgaria:
Verka Siderova, Eva Georgieva, Kalinka Valcheva, Sonya Kancheva. The songs which made her a renowned singer have become popular among several generations in Bulgaria.
Dobra Savova's activity cannot be limited only to the aesthetic and emotional pleasure that she gives during her thousands of concerts throughout the country and her numerous recordings on radio and television programmes. She is among those folk performers who use their art to make people see the beauty of folk music, to appreciate it, love it and ensure that it is preserved for the future generations. Her beautiful, melodious and meaningful songs help the Bulgarian people stay deeply connected to their native land and continue to express their feelings of love, joy, grief and forgiveness in a typical Bulgarian way.
Dobra Savova was born in 1932 in the heart of Dobroudja - the village of
Koriten, Krushari Municipality; Dobrich. She was the seventh child in a family who earned their living by doing agricultural work, where all members of the family - grandmothers, fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters are not only musicians, but real singers with natural talent of the highest
rank. The whole village values their talent and they are regularly invited to sing at weddings,
village gatherings and working-bees. And while some other villages pride in their gatherings
with men fighting, for the people of Koriten the most exciting and unforgettable experience is
when the time comes for Dobra's family to sing. Their songs are as sweet as white honey at St.
Elija's Day and as beautiful as the fluffy white shirt and violet-blue handkerchief taken out of
the wooden chest for the lovers' date. Dobra used to be invited on all such occasions with her
parents and brothers even though she was little at that time. She listened, took in everything and
often raised her voice to sing before the enraptured villagers..."
