The ensemble
Docuku are from Wallachia, an almost mythical land formed by parts of Czech, Slovak and Romania. Many generations ago its population was made up of people from these surrounding countries which perhaps partly explains why it is such a rich and fertile source of traditional music.
Docuku consists of a violin player, who's also leads of one of the best local cymbalom bands,
Solan; a drummer who used to play with the well-known Czech rock band
Mnaga and Zdorp, and the gifted young woman Lucie Redlova, who sings and plays
mandolin. Lucie Redlova is the daughter of veteran folk
singer Vlasta Redl.
Docuku's play contemporary arrangements of traditional folk songs.
From record label:
"The album 'Meziřečí' (Between Talks) introduces a representative profile of the contemporary repertoire of the band
Docuku, which consist mainly of resourceful modifications of folk songs from Valašsko (Wallachian region). The band turns to different sources only when the collections of Wallachian songs do not offer the rhythms, harmonies and melodies through which it would like to express itself. Therefore on the album, there is, apart from two Slovak and two Polish songs, one example of the Romanian folklore and several recordings of original, response songs.
A big advantage of the sensitive musicians from the Wallachian region is a humble service to the folk song, a distinct effort not to rob the folk heritage, only make its poetics and musical richness accessible in a new instrumentation to everybody who is willing to listen, who is charmed by the engaging rhythms of traditional music of the Central European area.
Docuku comment on their repertoire: 'Most often we look up a folk song which appeals to us with something – with its lyrics, melody, or just its drive. Then we finish it together for the needs of our instruments, both by rhythm and arrangement. We usually don’t change the melody of folk songs or we don’t interfere in the lyrics.
Our own songs are based on folklore melodies which are close to us. The music is composed by the accordion player
Roman Vavřík and lyrics written by our friend Marta
Procházková.' "
