'Folk Music from the Balkans'
(DunCD001)
London based Dunav was formed in the early sixties by a number of musicians interested in
the folk music of South Eastern Europe. This CD is a 'best of' compilation
taken from several of their album releases since their inception.
Their repertoire exceeds two hundred pieces drawn from the living traditions of Balkan folk
culture - ranging from the haunting beauty of a slow Romanian melody to the excitement of a fast Macedonian dance.
The group blends modern and ethnic instruments: violin, piano accordion, clarinet and guitar,
with Balkan drums (tapan, tarabuka), plucked stringed instruments (tambura, tamburitsa, brac, bouzouki, gadulka, bass gadulka),
and wind instruments (frulya, kaval, bagpipes, ocarina).
A further dimension is added by their various singers.
They play regularly in London at the Cecil Sharp House (a centre for all
folk music) as well as touring outside the UK. They have featured both on
UK radio and television and actively promote Balkan music.
Most recently they appeared at the highly successful Festival of International Dance
held at Cecil Sharp House as part of the Balkanplus presentation. Their programme
giving the audience a taste of the folklore from the Balkan heartlands of Bulgaria (Thrace and
Pirin), Serbia and Macedonia.
