'Anthology: Rare Jazz Fusion Gems
from Hungarian Vaults vol. 1'
Various Artists
(CS-35)
Compiled by Tom Wieland
Record label - Cosmic-Sounds London
Released 2005
From record label:
"This is the 8th in a row from the Rare Gems series and for the first time we have an external compiler. No wonder because
Tom Wieland has gained the reputation of an expert for this region and especially Hungary where he goes several times a year both to play and to chase rare records. Here we should also mention his Hungarian contacts and friends Keyser and Shuriken who have helped him in this research and who have compiled the second volume of
Hungarian Rare Gems.
On volume one Tom mostly went for the 60s tunes with a lot of modality and no doubt he was digging really deep for them. The opening track by famous Hungarian bass player
Aladar Pege is not from Hungary but from the extremely rare Czechoslovakian 7”. Although there is a Hungarian version of the same track (but also Yugoslavian and Bulgarian) we went for this one thinking that this one had better energy (check the percussion). Here included is another fast driving floor-filler track by
Pege from his Hungaroton album. The other tune that could be considered the odd one out would be
Grencsó Kollektíva’s track that is taken from their 1999 CD and – despite its obscurity - is not considered
'rarity' but this is your first chance to have it. All other tracks were taken from the infamous 60s series
MODERN JAZZ ANTHOLOGY on Hungarian state label Qualiton that really represented the best of Hungarian jazz and no wonder they became sought after and quite expensive in collectors circles. Tom went through all of them for you and here you’ll find his selection, the best of it. All in all another treasure chest full of rare gems worth preserving in your collection."
