In Dalmatia, Croatia, there exists a tradition of close harmony a capella singing. Usually these ensembles consist of up to 8 singers who can be accompanied by an acoustic guitar. Black Coffee take this tradition and add an element of jazz to it, resulting is something quite wonderful and distinct.

"Black Coffee is a famous jazz group from Split, Croatia, who have been active since 1993. For the first time in history of Croatian music, Black Coffee are fusing traditional Dalmatian music ( Dalmatia is a Mediterranean part of Croatia ), with traditions of Jazz. This is the result of a collaboration with 4 female singing ensemble called 'Mendula' (in Dalmatia the men's choir of 4-8 members is called a KLAPA).

In 1996. they released their first album titled simply 'BLACK COFFEE'. Since then the band has performed at numerous jazz and ethno festivals releasing several more albums.

Black Coffee's backbone is formed around its rhythm section; bass player Renato Svorinic and drummer Jadran Ducic Cico. The two of them perform in different all star acts and play with foreign jazz musicians such as Miles Griffith, George Makinto, Csaba Deseo, Tony Pancella, Primoz Grasic and others. Renato Svorinic, nominated many times for the best bass player, is also known by its work as an arranger and producer in many pop music projects, performing also with such great names of Croatian pop music as Gibonni and Vanna.

This 2003 album by Black Coffee titled 'KRIJANCA' won several awards. Together with KLAPA MENDULA they promote a contemporary vision of traditional Dalmatian music at many festivals such as- CHIETI JAZZ FESTIVAL (ITALY), PESCARA JAZZ(ITALY), INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAYS-ZAGREB and others.

The band continue to research their Dalmatian musical heritage."
