The Kocani Orkestar is one of best Gypsy brass bands in the tradition of Nefesli Orkestars of Macedonia.
These Gypsy Orkestars are the traditional brass bands of Balkans which were formed at the end of the 19th century in all the areas occupied by the troops
of the Turkish Ottomans - Serbia, Kosovo, parts of Greece, Bulgaria and Macedonia.
Some believe this music a mixture of Ottoman military music and local
songs and dances, enriched at the beginning of the 20th century by elements
of European music - rather similar to the tradition of east European
Klezmer music. Like the Klezmer bands, they offered their services for any occasion: marriage, baptism, communion,
anniversary and burials. This tradition still continues in the Balkan countries of today.
These Gypsy Orkestars are formed by friends, parents and neighbors, as is the case for
Naat Veliov and
his gypsy band - who are known under the name of King Naat Veliov and the
Original Kocani Orkestar . The members of the Koçani orchestra often changes, but the core of the group
remains Naat and his family.
Naat Veliov was born in Koçani in 1957. His grandfather, father, and now his
son all play the trumpet. Naat's father passed on to him the position of 1st trumpet and orchestre leader,
International fame then beckoned with Neat taking trumpet solos in the Emir
Kusturiça feature films 'Time of the Gypsies' and 'Underground'.
The music of the Kocani Orkestar is distinguished from that of the other similar bands
thanks to the exciting elements of Turkish, Arab, and Latin-American rhythms,
as well as tinges of Indian jazz and ragas that Naat introduces to the arrangements.
